Current view of pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of genital prolapse and its complications: A review of the literature
Abstract
Genital prolapse — descent and prolapse of female pelvic organs — and various forms of urinary incontinence are among the leading topics in modern urogynecology. Published data confirm the complex etiology and ambiguousness of pathogenesis of genital prolapse and its complications. The present review addresses current view of pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis and basic methods of treatment of this condition. We demonstrate that clear methodology of the treatment choice is currently absent, and that this choice is usually made through empirical selection, which explains the high incidence of relapses, repeated surgical interventions and formation of groups of incurable patients forced to live with incontinence symptoms.
