A literature analysis of modern concepts of the etiology, pathogenesis of periodontitis and innovative treatment methods is carried out. Modern aspects of the etiology of periodontitis based on the ecological hypotheses of dental plaque are presented. The leading role of microbial virulence factors in the pathogenesis of periodontitis is shown. It is established that the development of periodontitis is accompanied by an imbalance in the cytokine system; in patients with periodontitis, the local level of proinflammatory cytokines is increased. Particular attention in the review is paid to modern methods of periodontitis therapy such as plasmolifting, cytokine therapy and stem cell therapy, their effectiveness and prospects for use in clinical practice are shown.
