Abstract

More than 100 million vertebrates are used in the world annually in scientific research, drug testing and training. The benefits derived from the use of animals in scientific research are undeniable, but the methods by which this benefitis achieved should be as humane as possible. The article emphasizes the importance of observing the bioethical principles of 3Rs (Refinement, Reduction, Replacement) to increase the effectiveness and humanity of medical experiments. The milestones in the development of the medical experiment and the principles of bioethics are singled out;
national and international laws and regulations governing the use of animals in scientific research are discussed.
