Abstract

Summary. Leukocyte elastase activity has been shown to be increased in patients with atopic dermatitis and to correlate with the disease severity. However, this increase is not always accompanied by an adequately increased activity of the α1-proteinase inhibitor (α1-PI). Evidence suggest that the decreased α1-PI activity is an unfavorable prognostic sign of changes in BP that contribute to further progression of the destructive process.
